Neurodiversity-affirming therapy

Neurodiversity-affirming therapy is an approach that recognizes and values the diverse ways in which brains function, particularly in individuals with conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more. This therapy focuses on embracing and supporting neurological differences rather than viewing them as deficits.

As a therapist whose partner was diagnosed with autism later in life it was a challenge to find the right therapy. Gaining knowledge, attending trainings and reading books to better understand working with this population has been a huge help both personally and professionally.

What is Neurodiversity?

The term “neurodiversity” was first coined in 1998 by Judy Singer, an Australian sociologist. It is used to describe the natural variations in human neurology, such as autism, dyslexia, ADHD, Tourette's Syndrome, and other neurological differences.

Neurodiversity is a spectrum, and everyone has a unique combination of traits and abilities. Neurodiversity-affirming therapy seeks to help neurodiverse individuals recognize and embrace their neurology, rather than pathologize their differences.
